Girlstart After School reaches more than 2,000 4th-5th grade girls with free STEM education programs every week throughout the school year at our partner schools.

Girlstart is currently reaching 19 districts in Central Texas, Bryan/College Station, Houston, North Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Waco.  And we aim to grow further! Girlstart is scaling up Girlstart After School to reach more girls. We encourage you to join the Girlstart movement as a STEM Champion; we’ll keep you updated on our #growgirlstart progress, and find out how you may be able to connect us to resources that can help grow Girlstart in your community.

Girlstart After School is a free, weekly program in the fall and spring semesters that encourages young women to be “brave, creative, and curious.” Girlstart After School seeks to enhance and supplement girls’ science learning in the classroom through engaging activities that introduce important STEM concepts in a hands-on and informal environment. Girlstart After School is particularly impactful for girls because of the length, consistency, and rigor of the program. All lessons are aligned to Texas’s learning standards as well as NGSS, and Girlstart’s STEM CREW staffing model ensures that participants receive instruction and mentorship from talented, dedicated educators and role models.

Research shows that Girlstart After School participants consistently and dramatically out-perform their peers on standardized math and science tests. Girlstart girls also, post-program participation, enroll in advanced math and science courses at a significantly higher rate than their non-participant peers, and the number of advanced courses increases over time, in contrast to non-participants, whose engagemend in advanced math and science courses decreases over time. Download the full report HERE.
